{"id":2414,"date":"2018-11-17T21:43:03","date_gmt":"2018-11-17T11:43:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/theveterinarian.com.au\/?p=2414"},"modified":"2018-11-28T21:47:45","modified_gmt":"2018-11-28T11:47:45","slug":"hendra-horse-euthanased-in-nsw","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theveterinarian.com.au\/?p=2414","title":{"rendered":"Hendra horse euthanased in NSW"},"content":{"rendered":"A positive Hendra virus case involving a four-year-old Arab cross has occurred near Tweed Heads, NSW.\r\nThe case was confirmed by a veterinarian who was wearing protective equipment at the time.\r\nThe horse was not vaccinated against Hendra and was later euthanased.\r\nAVA spokesperson Ben Poole said it was critical to vaccinate horses in high risk areas.\r\n\u201c[Vaccination] provides a horse health and welfare benefit, and a public health benefit,\u201d he said.\r\n\u201cThis latest death is an unfortunate reminder of an unnecessary death of another horse, highlighting that the Hendra virus can occur at any time of the year and is not predictable.\u201d<!--more-->\r\nPoole said testing for the disease is time consuming and delays potential treatments.\r\n\u201cThat is why vaccination is so important, because a vaccinated horse has an extremely low risk of having Hendra virus infection,\u201d he said.\r\n\u201cSadly, another horse has died from this disease despite there being a fully registered vaccine available.\r\n\u201cVaccination is the only way to ensure high standards of horse health and welfare whilst also reducing the risk to veterinarians, horse handlers and owners.\u201d\r\nThe vaccine was introduced in 2012 and is registered with the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority.\r\n\u201cVaccination provides a public health and workplace health and safety benefit by reducing the risk of Hendra virus transmission to humans and other susceptible animals and helps to ensure high standards of animal health and welfare,\u201d Poole said.\r\n<strong>SAM WORRAD<\/strong>\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A positive Hendra virus case involving a four-year-old Arab cross has occurred near Tweed Heads, NSW.
