{"id":255,"date":"2010-09-16T10:50:48","date_gmt":"2010-09-16T00:50:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/theveterinarian.com.au\/?p=255"},"modified":"2010-09-16T11:39:21","modified_gmt":"2010-09-16T01:39:21","slug":"lucky-duck-escapes-arrow-death","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theveterinarian.com.au\/?p=255","title":{"rendered":"Lucky duck escapes arrow death"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"_mcePaste\">\r\n\r\nA wild pacific black duck has survived after being shot through the head with an arrow near Mandurah, 72 kilometres south of Perth.<a href=\"https:\/\/theveterinarian.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Lucky-Duck.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-256\" style=\"margin-top: 1px; margin-bottom: 1px; margin-left: 2px; margin-right: 2px;\" title=\"Lucky Duck\" src=\"https:\/\/theveterinarian.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Lucky-Duck-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>\r\n\r\nThe duck was captured on July 31 by a WA Sea Bird volunteer and a Mandurah City ranger after it was found and reported by a local resident.\r\n\r\nDepartment of Environment and Conservation (DEC) wildlife officer, Cameron Craigie, said the pacific black duck is protected under the Wildlife Conservation Act and the shooter could be fined $4000.\r\n\r\nHe has been tracking the animal\u2019s progress at Coastal Veterinary Centre in Mandurah, and said it is likely to be released in the coming weeks.<!--more-->\r\n\r\n\u201cIt\u2019s looking good because the holes are sealing up and there is no sign of inflammation or swelling,\u201d he said.\r\n\r\n\u201cWe\u2019re feeling positive that the wound will not lead to any infections.\r\n\r\n\u201cIt is definitely one lucky duck.\u201d\r\n\r\nCraigie said though it is not common, attacks of this nature are not unheard of in the area.\r\n\r\n\u201cWe have had quite a few instances down that way with people inflicting wounds with crossbows, arrows and gunshots,\u201d he said.\r\n\r\n\u201cBut it is certainly uncommon to see an animal which is so small and delicate survive something like this.\u201d\r\n\r\nCraigie has called on the public to come forward with information about the attack.\r\n\r\n\u201cIt can be hard to build a case in these situations, but we have given the arrow to forensics and it will be examined by police and checked against their records if fingerprints are found,\u201d he said.\r\n\u201cOften people are reluctant to provide information in cases where there is a weapon involved, as they can feel threatened by the perpetrators, but we\u2019re hoping this won\u2019t be the case.\u201d\r\n\r\nCraigie asked anyone with information to call the DEC on (08) 9474 9055.\r\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm; border-top: none; border-bottom: 1px solid #000000; border-left: none; border-right: none; padding-top: 0cm; padding-bottom: 0.07cm; padding-left: 0cm; padding-right: 0cm;\">SAM WORRAD<\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A wild pacific black duck has survived after being shot through the head with an arrow near Mandurah, 72 kilometres south of Perth.
