{"id":2553,"date":"2020-09-30T09:15:26","date_gmt":"2020-09-29T23:15:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/theveterinarian.com.au\/?p=2553"},"modified":"2020-10-09T09:18:09","modified_gmt":"2020-10-08T23:18:09","slug":"animal-welfare-award-for-sue-foster","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theveterinarian.com.au\/?p=2553","title":{"rendered":"Animal welfare award for Sue Foster"},"content":{"rendered":"Sue Foster has received the 2020 David Bayvel Award for Excellence in Animal Welfare. \r\n\r\nThe panel was unanimous in its decision and President of the ANZCVS Animal Welfare Chapter, Di Evans, praised Foster\u2019s contribution to the field. \r\n\r\n\u201cFoster has worked tirelessly for many years in highlighting the welfare issues associated with live animal export as one of the founders and the spokesperson for Vets Against Live Export,\u201d she said. \r\n\r\nFoster was also acknowledged for her contribution to PetFAST, a pioneering initiative enabling veterinarians to register potential adverse effects of foods.  <!--more-->\r\n\r\nThe presentation of the award occurred via Zoom at the Animal Welfare Chapter\u2019s AGM in July. \r\nIn her speech, Evans described Foster as embodying attributes close to the late David Bayvel\u2019s heart. \r\n\r\nShe cited displays of leadership in animal advocacy, \u201cunderpinned by professional knowledge, integrity and compassion.\u201d \r\n\r\n\u201cAlthough this veterinarian will acknowledge that other vets have been involved in this work, the indisputable bulk of the work has been undertaken through their own individual efforts,\u201d Evans said. \r\n\r\n\u201cHundreds of report reviews, thousands of datasets analysed, countless media interviews, social media communications and many meetings and submissions.\u201d \r\n\r\nFoster told <em>The Veterinarian<\/em> that it was humbling to receive an award established to honour the memory of David Bayvel, \u201can extraordinary veterinarian\u201d. \r\n\r\n\u201cThe Animal Welfare Chapter is basically comprised of amazing colleagues who do great work with animal welfare all the time,\u201d she said. \r\n\r\n\u201cI think I said on the day that I am not sure I am really worthy of the award, but the good thing is it gives me the encouragement to keep trying. \r\n\r\n\u201cI\u2019m not someone who really goes in for awards very much, but it does give you that boost at the end of a long day to think \u201cif you\u2019re really worthy of that award, you\u2019d better keep going!\u201d\u201d \r\n\r\nFoster said that she views the accolade as a victory for veterinary advocacy, and particularly for those who work unpaid in their private time. \r\n\r\n\u201cThe encouragement that this award can give to any veterinarian to advocate for animal welfare, well, the significance of that can\u2019t be understated,\u201d she said. \r\n\r\nShe said the award also indicates that welfare problems related to live export are not an outlying issue.  \r\n\r\n\u201cWhile this award does not in itself legitimise VALE, it does indicate we\u2019re not just a fringe bunch of loonies which is quite important as well,\u201d she said. \r\n\r\n\u201cFarmers and livestock veterinarians can dismiss me as the agitating cat vet or whatever they perceive me to be, but I think this says \u201cno\u201d.  \r\n\r\n\u201cOne of the highest professional bodies (the ANZCVS) has actually recognised this work for being valuable.\u201d \r\n\r\nFoster added that while she is uncomfortable discussing the award, one of the responsibilities of receiving it is ensuring it is known because it recognises veterinary advocacy, \u201cand it may give other veterinarians confidence to advocate for animal welfare.\u201d \r\n\r\nA plaque and $950 will be presented to Foster at a later date. \r\n\r\n<strong>SAM WORRAD<\/strong>\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sue Foster has received the 2020 David Bayvel Award for Excellence in Animal Welfare.
