{"id":2576,"date":"2020-10-28T09:43:44","date_gmt":"2020-10-27T23:43:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/theveterinarian.com.au\/?p=2576"},"modified":"2020-10-28T09:43:44","modified_gmt":"2020-10-27T23:43:44","slug":"byron-hospitals-patron-is-rock-royalty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theveterinarian.com.au\/?p=2576","title":{"rendered":"Byron hospital’s patron is rock royalty"},"content":{"rendered":"The Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital (BBWH) has announced that its founding patron is Biggy Pop, the cockatoo son of Stooges singer Iggy Pop.\r\n\r\nBiggy issued a statement to express his distress about the deaths of millions of animals in a shocking bushfire season, and how he flew at the opportunity to help.\r\n\r\n\u201cThat really horrified me,\u201d he said.\r\n\r\n\u201cI heard about the team of Australian veterinarians building Australia\u2019s largest mobile wildlife hospital and I thought \u2018that is such a brilliant idea\u2019.\r\n\r\n\u201cSo, when they asked if I would be their founding patron, I thought \u2018yeah, I\u2019d love to connect with my bird sisters and brothers in the magical land of Oz\u2019.\u201d\r\n\r\nThe Byron Bay-based mobile facility will include Bree Talbot, who comes to the BBWH from the University of Sydney\u2019s Avian Reptile and Exotic Pet Hospital where she specialised in the care of exotic pets such as koalas, wombats, reptiles and various bird species.\r\n\r\nTalbot is a member and examiner of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists in unusual pet medicine and surgery.\r\n\r\n\u201cI\u2019m really looking forward to joining such an experienced team of specialist wildlife veterinarians committed to giving vulnerable wildlife all the treatment they need to get them back into the wild where they belong,\u201d she said.\r\n\r\nThe not-for-profit hospital will operate from a custom-built 14.4 metre semi-trailer.\r\n\r\nThe vehicle will be unveiled in late November, at which point it will be able to respond swiftly to wildlife in crisis around the country and\u00a0be the precursor to a permanent hospital on a 100-acre site in the area.\r\n\r\nThe BBWH team will be based at the Lennox Head Vet Clinic until the new location is constructed.\r\n\r\nIggy Pop said he found Biggy around 12 years ago, stuffed alongside some chickens into a roadside vendor\u2019s cage.\r\n\r\n\u201cHe seemed to be in peril of a bad future,” Pop said.\r\n\r\n“So we decided to take care of him, responsibly.\r\n\r\n\u201cHe gets and gives a lot of love.\u201d\r\n\r\nWhile Biggy and Iggy are holed-up near Miami, Florida, they will be spreading the word about the BBWH via Biggy\u2019s Instagram account.\u00a0<\/a>\r\n\r\nBiggy Pop is a Moluccan cockatoo, which\u00a0are endemic to the South Moluccas in eastern Indonesia.\r\nSAM WORRAD<\/strong>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
