{"id":2856,"date":"2021-09-14T09:52:08","date_gmt":"2021-09-13T23:52:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/theveterinarian.com.au\/?p=2856"},"modified":"2021-09-02T16:54:56","modified_gmt":"2021-09-02T06:54:56","slug":"mobile-wildlife-hospital-receives-bushfire-recovery-grant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theveterinarian.com.au\/?p=2856","title":{"rendered":"Mobile wildlife hospital receives bushfire recovery grant"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Byron Bay Wildlife\nHospital has been awarded $401,500 for the construction of accommodation and\ntraining facilities for emergency wildlife veterinarians, vet nurses,\nvolunteers and carers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWildlife vets,\nnurses and carers are critical to the conservation and care of Australian\nwildlife,\u201d Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital (BBWH) Founder and CEO Stephen Van Mil\nsaid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey are\nessentially on call 24\/7, putting enormous strain on them and their families.\nWe desperately need infrastructure enabling these care professionals to be\naccommodated close to the native animals in their care.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;Wildlife\nVet Stay and Training Centre&nbsp;will use local businesses and contractors to\nplan, construct and fit out two fixed and connected \u2018Tiny Houses\u2019 and a\nfacility for education programs. It will also support life education programs\nfor indigenous youth dealing with trauma and loss by facilitating healing and\nlearning through connection with Australian wildlife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The grant funding is part of the $4.5 billion commitment\nfrom the NSW and Commonwealth governments to support economic, social, built\nand natural environment recovery from the 2019-20 Black Summer Bushfires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Local Nationals Member of the\nLegislative Council Ben Franklin said this investment from the State and\nCommonwealth Government\u2019s would support the Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital to\ncontinue offering crucial and life-saving care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cByron Bay Wildlife Hospital has\ntreated almost 1000 wildlife patients in ten months, working with wildlife\ncarers and vets across the NSW North Coast and hinterland,\u201d Franklin said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cInfrastructure of this kind will\nhelp the Wildlife Hospital meet the growing demand for dedicated wildlife\ntreatment, provide an essential, practical service for vets, volunteers and\ncarers, and draw people to the region as a hub for education and skills\ndevelopment in wildlife conservation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital is based in the Northern Rivers,\nan Australian biodiversity hotspot. The not-for-profit organisation\u2019s footprint\nis expanding as it continues to relieve the burden of providing wildlife care\nfrom general practice veterinarians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re honoured and grateful that the NSW and Australian\ngovernments have seen the merit in our project. Our vision is that this will\nhelp develop a new narrative for our region as a hub for wildlife conservation,\nwith resources and facilities collaboratively created by the community,\nbusiness,
