{"id":2883,"date":"2021-10-09T16:10:00","date_gmt":"2021-10-09T06:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/theveterinarian.com.au\/?p=2883"},"modified":"2021-10-11T16:11:48","modified_gmt":"2021-10-11T06:11:48","slug":"call-for-increased-aid-for-afghan-veterinary-teams","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theveterinarian.com.au\/?p=2883","title":{"rendered":"Call for increased aid for Afghan veterinary teams"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Members of the Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) and\nAustralasian Veterinary Boards Council (AVBC) are calling on the Australian\nGovernment to assist Afghan veterinarians, veterinary paraprofessionals and\ntheir families in leaving Afghanistan and resettling in Australia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are deeply distressed by the events currently unfolding\nin Afghanistan, and the serious risks to the safety of the Afghan people,\u201d AVA\nPresident Warwick Vale and AVBC Chair Peter Gibbs said in a joint statement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are highly concerned for the wellbeing of Afghan\nveterinary teams and their families. We call on the Australian government to\nprovide all possible assistance to Afghan veterinarians, veterinary\nparaprofessionals and their families seeking to leave the country &#8211; especially\nthose who have worked with western charities and non-government organisations\nwhose safety may be at risk.\u201d&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWith appropriate visas, settled Afghanistan veterinarians\nwould need support from Australian veterinarians to mentor and induct them into\nlocal practices &#8211; which incidentally are facing dire workforce shortages &#8211;\nprior to sitting the Australasian Veterinary Examination,\u201d Julie Strous,\nExecutive Director of AVBC said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe stand ready to help our Afghan colleagues become part of\nthe Australian veterinary community,\u201d AVA President Warwick Vale said. \u201cI\nencourage the local veterinary profession to provide the practical experience\nrequired for them to integrate into the Australian veterinary workforce.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAfghan veterinary professionals have made a vital\ncontribution to public health, animal health and welfare and we strongly\nsupport opportunities to help them settle in Australia and continue in their\ncareers,\u201d AVA Head of Veterinary and Public Affairs, Cristy Secombe said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Members of the
