{"id":2885,"date":"2021-10-16T16:12:45","date_gmt":"2021-10-16T06:12:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/theveterinarian.com.au\/?p=2885"},"modified":"2021-10-11T16:16:13","modified_gmt":"2021-10-11T06:16:13","slug":"ava-fields-increased-ivermectin-queries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theveterinarian.com.au\/?p=2885","title":{"rendered":"AVA fields increased Ivermectin queries"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>A<\/strong>The AVA has been receiving enquiries from journalists about whether vets are being asked for Ivermectin for use as a COVID-19 treatment\/prevention in humans, and whether there are concerns about supply of the drug.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The AVA issued a\nmedia release which said Ivermectin is primarily used in treating parasites in\nlarge animals, and these preparations are very different to those approved for\nhuman use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLarge animal drugs\nare often very concentrated because they are used in species that weigh a lot\nmore humans do \u2026 you should never use medications intended for animals on\nyourself,\u201d AVA Head of Veterinary and Public Affairs, Cristy Secombe said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have not received\nreports of any supply issues of Ivermectin, and there are alternative products\nveterinarians can use in the event of a temporary shortage, so that animal\nwelfare won\u2019t be negatively impacted.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The AVA is\nrecommending vets reiterate the following if they are asked to supply\nIvermectin for reasons other than the treatment of animals:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The TGA has made it\nvery clear that Ivermectin is not approved to prevent or treat COVID-19, and\nthere is insufficient evidence to validate the use of Ivermectin in patients\nwith COVID-19.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Animal products\ncontaining Ivermectin should not be used in people.
