The Ellis Park animal sanctuary has\nreached its funding goal for building materials, having received 65,300 Euros (more\nthan $100,000 AUD) in donations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Sumatran sanctuary is a \u2018forever\nhome\u2019 for animals with injuries and trauma, and its recent fundraising campaign\ninvolved auctioning of memorabilia from musician and park co-founder Warren\nEllis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ellis Park has completed its perimeter\nfencing and is now building enclosures and a fruit storage room. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Park co-founder Lorinda Jane said one\nof the enclosures is for a monkey with no arms named Rina, and further\nfacilities for sun bears are in construction. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe enclosures will be fairly big\nspaces, 30 metres by 30 metres, so they\u2019re a nice big space and they\u2019ll have\nlittle ponds to play in, trees to climb on and it will be as natural as\npossible,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re thrilled with how fast it\u2019s\nprogressing; the Sumatra Wildlife Centre is next door, and it took them two and\na half years to raise the amount of money we\u2019ve been able to raise in two and a\nhalf months.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sanctuary\u2019s Instagram has attracted\nattention for its news about future Ellis Park resident Julio, a juvenile\nmacaque who suffered severe head trauma and other wounds after being\nbeaten. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe do a daily update on Julio because\neveryone is so concerned about this tiny little monkey; he\u2019s lost sight in one\neye and the images from when he first came in were quite gruesome,\u201d Jane\nsaid. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe story of Julio shows what Ellis\nPark is about, because if it wasn\u2019t for this place there would be nowhere for\nlittle monkeys like him to go and that\u2019s why the centre is so important.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ellis Park has decided to build a\nveterinary clinic half-way between its facilities and the Sumatra Wildlife\nCentre so that both sides can access the equipment.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sanctuary\u2019s next aim is to cover\nmonthly running costs for feed, care, and essential services. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen travel permits, we\u2019ll accept\nvolunteers to the centre to do gardening and help feed the animals, that\u2019s\nall in the pipelines,\u201d Jane said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo many great things are happening\nover there at the moment; we\u2019re looking at more land as well.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
