{"id":3134,"date":"2022-10-06T12:10:00","date_gmt":"2022-10-06T02:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/theveterinarian.com.au\/?p=3134"},"modified":"2022-10-13T12:15:52","modified_gmt":"2022-10-13T02:15:52","slug":"call-for-rural-graduate-hecs-changes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theveterinarian.com.au\/?p=3134","title":{"rendered":"Call for rural graduate HECS changes"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The AVA has repeated its call to the Federal Government to remove the HECS debts of veterinary graduates who live and work in rural and regional Australia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The National Farmers Federation (NFF) is also lobbying for discounted fees, loan offsets and HECS relief for graduates and veterinary students who live regionally, as recommended in their 2022 <em>Jobs and Skills Summit<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The recommendations from the summit aim to influence reform in the sector and help agriculture to be \u201cembraced as a modern, professionalised workplace and employer of choice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AVA President Bronwyn Orr said the tight job climate in the regions is causing difficulties for vets, and changes are required to create sustainability in the profession.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cVets play a critically important role in ensuring that commercial farms and their livestock remain healthy,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut not enough veterinary graduates are moving to the regions to fill these important roles, putting increasing pressure on the agricultural industry\u2026a central pillar to Australia\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn order to boost the attraction of working in the regions, we are calling on the Albanese Government to wipe the HECS debt for all graduates willing to live and work in the regions and use their skills to support agriculture.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NFF President Fiona Simson said the federation\u2019s <em>Jobs and Skills Summit <\/em>provides an opportunity to address labour shortages impeding Australia\u2019s farm sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEven before the pandemic, farmers were reducing planting or shifting to less labour-intensive produce,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRecent weather has thrown curveballs at food production. Couple that with issues like the workforce crisis, and the results are devastating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGovernments can\u2019t control the weather, but they can ease the workforce crisis.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The skills shortage has plagued the veterinary industry for years.
