{"id":3203,"date":"2023-04-07T12:17:58","date_gmt":"2023-04-07T02:17:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/theveterinarian.com.au\/?p=3203"},"modified":"2023-04-10T12:23:12","modified_gmt":"2023-04-10T02:23:12","slug":"hecs-debt-forgiveness-needed-to-aid-industry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theveterinarian.com.au\/?p=3203","title":{"rendered":"HECS debt forgiveness needed to aid industry"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Rural veterinary business Apiam is calling for HECS forgiveness to ease pressure on workforce shortages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apiam Managing Director Chris Richards told <em>The Veterinarian <\/em>that it is time the government took rural veterinary workforce shortages as seriously as those in health and teaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe rural veterinary workforce shortages are not going anywhere as we compete with not only the metro centres but overseas as well,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDemand for veterinary services in the regions is booming, largely due to rising population, as well as the growing \u2018humanisation\u2019 of pets.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To contend with the growth in demand, Richards said it is important to retain veterinary talent, not merely attract it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo get HECS forgiveness right, it is crucial that we instil a minimum length of time, such as four years, that these graduates have to complete their placements in the regions,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a recent AVA survey, veterinary students were asked if they would consider taking a regional\/rural veterinary role \u201cwithin the first five years of graduation to be eligible to have part or all of your HECS debt removed?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite an admittedly small sample size of around 100 students, 100 per cent of respondents said they would consider utilising such a program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>SAM WORRAD<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rural veterinary business Apiam is calling for HECS forgiveness to ease pressure on workforce shortages.
