{"id":3366,"date":"2024-02-06T09:42:00","date_gmt":"2024-02-05T23:42:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/theveterinarian.com.au\/?p=3366"},"modified":"2024-01-23T12:51:42","modified_gmt":"2024-01-23T02:51:42","slug":"federal-government-confirms-commitment-to-phase-out-live-sheep-export-trade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theveterinarian.com.au\/?p=3366","title":{"rendered":"Federal government confirms commitment to phase out live sheep export trade"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>One of the largest federal parliamentary e-petitions in history, that called for an end to the live sheep export trade, was tabled towards the end of November with Agriculture Minister Senator Murray Watt, confirming the government\u2019s commitment to an \u2018orderly and considered\u2019 transition away from the trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In acknowledging \u2018considerable community concerns about animal welfare in the trade of live sheep\u2019, Watt said he understood the desire to see action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe government took the commitment to phase out live sheep exports by sea to two elections, and it\u2019s my intention to deliver on this commitment, although the phase out won\u2019t take place during this term of the parliament, giving time for individuals and businesses to prepare for a transition away from the trade,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Suzie Fowler, RSPCA Australia\u2019s Chief Science Officer welcomed the government\u2019s confirmation saying it was \u2018on the right side of history\u2019, but urged swift action be taken to introduce legislation in the current parliamentary term so the end of the trade was embedded in law before the next federal election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNow that the independent panel has provided their report to government there should be no impediment to introducing and passing legislation as soon as possible in this term to improve welfare for Australian sheep, meet the community\u2019s expectations, and provide certainty for farmers,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Anne Layton-Bennett<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of the largest federal parliamentary e-petitions in history, that called for an end to the live sheep export trade, was tabled towards the end of November with Agriculture Minister Senator Murray Watt, confirming the government\u2019s commitment to an \u2018orderly and considered\u2019 transition away from the trade.
