Together, Nedd and Dougie are championing the Appeal’s mission to keep pets and people together during times of hardship.

The 2025 Tree of Hope Appeal comes amid record pressure on the rescue sector. According to the Petbarn Foundation’s State of Rescues Report 2025, developed in partnership with the Animal Rescue Cooperative (ARC), 84 per cent of rescue organisations have seen an increase in surrenders over the past 12 months, while 86 per cent report operating at or near capacity. Most rescues cite rising cost-of-living pressures as the primary cause.

Additional findings reveal:

59 per cent of rescues report animals staying longer in care, with almost one in four remaining for more than a year.

60 per cent say donations have dropped, while 90 per cent report increased operating costs per animal.

75 per cent have seen a rise in requests for assistance from people experiencing homelessness or severe housing stress.

Petbarn Foundation National Manager, Janelle Miller, said the findings underscore how vital community support has become.
“Our annual report highlights the real impact of economic hardship on animal welfare,” she said. “Rescue groups are stretched, donations are falling, and more Australians are reaching out for help to care for their pets. The Tree of Hope Appeal gives every pet lover an opportunity to make a tangible difference.”

Nedd Brockmann said the Appeal is about more than supporting rescue animals – it’s about supporting people, too. “There are Aussies doing it tough who are being forced to give up their pets – their best friends, their family,” he said. “This appeal helps keep those families together and gives animals the love and safety they deserve.”

Since its inception in 2012, the Tree of Hope Appeal has raised more than $6 million, providing food, shelter, veterinary care and outreach programs for pets and people in need. Beneficiary organisations have included RSPCA, Empower Therapy Dogs, Sydney Children’s Hospital, Vets Beyond Borders, the Animal Rescue Cooperative, and Pet Medical Crisis.

This year, all profits from reusable bag and Hedgehog toy sales in Greencross Vets clinics will be donated to Sophie’s Legacy, supporting veterinary mental health initiatives.

The Petbarn Foundation’s Tree of Hope Appeal runs until 26 December 2025.
