{"id":3722,"date":"2026-02-12T09:24:45","date_gmt":"2026-02-11T23:24:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/theveterinarian.com.au\/?p=3722"},"modified":"2026-01-28T09:26:55","modified_gmt":"2026-01-27T23:26:55","slug":"centenary-awards-recognise-nsw-vets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theveterinarian.com.au\/?p=3722","title":{"rendered":"Centenary Awards recognise NSW vets"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Veterinary Practitioners Board of New South Wales has announced the recipients of the 2025 Centenary Awards, recognising outstanding veterinary leadership across One Health, One Welfare and Professional Practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Presented at the Board\u2019s Annual General Meeting on 17 November, the awards honour John House, Tanya Carter and Ian Lean for their sustained contributions to animal health, public wellbeing and professional excellence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Established in 2024 to mark 100 years since the <em>Veterinary Surgeons Act 1923<\/em>, the Centenary Awards have now become an ongoing program designed to highlight the diverse and often under-recognised roles veterinarians play across society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cVeterinarians don\u2019t just care for animals; we safeguard people, communities and the environment,\u201d Magdoline Awad, President of the Veterinary Practitioners Board NSW, said. \u201cOur profession sits at the intersection of science, ethics and public wellbeing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While companion animal practice may dominate public perceptions of the profession, the Board noted that veterinarians across NSW contribute to critical areas including food safety, biosecurity, emergency response, research, academia, wildlife conservation, shelter medicine and military service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recipients of the 2025 Awards were selected following a rigorous nomination and review process by a Board-appointed committee with expertise spanning One Health, One Welfare and Professional Practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis year\u2019s honourees reflect the enormous contribution veterinarians make to NSW: an impact that is too often overlooked in national honours systems,\u201d Awad said. \u201cEach recipient exemplifies the profession\u2019s commitment to scientific rigour, ethical leadership and service to the community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the past 100 years, more than 11,700 veterinarians have practised across NSW, with almost 5,000 currently registered with the Board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDuring COVID, veterinarians were recognised as an essential service because our role matters,\u201d Awad said. \u201cThat importance continues every day.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She also highlighted the profession\u2019s strong culture of service, from disaster response and pro bono work to capacity-building initiatives in under-resourced regions, both locally and internationally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Centenary Awards reflect the breadth, resilience and social value of modern veterinary careers,\u201d Awad said. \u201cThey remind us that protecting animal health also protects people, communities and the environment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2025 Centenary Award recipients<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/theveterinarian.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/DR-JOHN-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"771\" src=\"https:\/\/theveterinarian.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/DR-JOHN-1024x771.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3725\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theveterinarian.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/DR-JOHN-1024x771.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/theveterinarian.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/DR-JOHN-300x226.jpg 300w, https:\/\/theveterinarian.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/DR-JOHN-768x578.jpg 768w, https:\/\/theveterinarian.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/DR-JOHN-1536x1157.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/theveterinarian.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/DR-JOHN-2048x1542.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/theveterinarian.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/DR-JOHN-136x102.jpg 136w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">One Health Award: John House<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Associate Professor John House, University of Sydney, was recognised for his contributions to advanced veterinary diagnostics, disease prevention, herd health, animal welfare and food system resilience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The selection committee highlighted his leadership in antimicrobial stewardship, research translation, education and mentorship, noting the breadth of his impact across clinical practice, academia and industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reflecting on the award, House said his career illustrates the interconnected nature of veterinary work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cClinical practice, teaching, research and supporting farmers and their families all reflect the One Health approach.
