{"id":605,"date":"2011-08-10T11:48:53","date_gmt":"2011-08-10T01:48:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/theveterinarian.com.au\/?p=605"},"modified":"2011-08-12T10:47:37","modified_gmt":"2011-08-12T00:47:37","slug":"10000-scholarship-for-animal-welfare-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theveterinarian.com.au\/?p=605","title":{"rendered":"$10,000 scholarship for animal welfare research"},"content":{"rendered":"An annual $10,000 scholarship to support research into improving farm animal welfare has been launched.\r\nThe Rosalind Dixon Memorial Scholarship for Farm Animal Welfare Research is supported by the University of Queensland (UQ) Centre for Animal Welfare and Ethics and the Humane Society International.\r\nCo-ordinated by UQ&#8217;s Centre for Animal Welfare and Ethics, the scholarship is available to students undertaking Honours or postgraduate research into issues in intensive farming at any Australian university.\r\nThe scholarship was donated by Garth Dixon, in memory of his wife Rosalind Dixon. The Dixons have made a long-stranding contribution to the preservation of native vegetation in NSW.\r\n\u201cI have had exposure to the suffering that factory farmed animals endure,\u201d Dixon said.<!--more-->\r\n\u201cI would like to think that the scholarship I have established in honour of Rosalind is offering a helping hand to the people who are working for more humane care of intensively farmed animals.\u201d\r\nHumane Society International Director, Verna Simpson, said she was looking forward to seeing some of the innovative ideas that come from the applications.\r\n\u201cWe are anticipating some wonderful ideas that generate future research in farm animal welfare,\u201d Simpson said.\r\n\u201cThe scholarship will be awarded each year so it will definitely be able to have a positive impact on improving the welfare of farm animals.\u201d\r\nThe projects could lead to eliminating practices that impact on an animal&#8217;s ability to express natural behaviours such as; nurturing their young, interacting with their herd or flock, freedom for movement and exercise, minimising stress in their environment and handling and alternatives to surgical procedures.\r\nApplications close on Tuesday, August 30 2011.","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An annual $10,000 scholarship to support research into improving farm animal welfare has been launched.
