Honours for veterinary industry figures

A number of veterinarians were honoured on Australia Day.

Sydney University Emeritus Professor Paul Canfield was recognised as a member of the order of Australia (AM) for significant service to veterinary science education, particularly in the field of morbid anatomy and clinical pathology, and his service to professional associations. Canfield is well known for mentoring Australian veterinarians in the field of wildlife health, and continues to do so.

Also from Sydney University, William (Bill) Porges was recognised for services to tertiary education and veterinary science. Porges’ long association with St Andrew’s College was acknowledged.

Victorian veterinarian Barbara Wellington received the medal (OAM) for significant service to veterinary science, to professional associations, to animal welfare, and to the community. Wellington was Chief Veterinarian for the RSPCA from 1985-98 and again 1999-2002. She is also a past president of the Australian Veterinary Association.
